Privacy policy
Last updated: 5 October 2026.
Hindsight is developed and operated by Chris Rainey, known as Crainey, who is responsible for the website and information sent to Hindsight support. Contact contact@crainey.co.uk with privacy questions or requests.
This policy covers the Hindsight Windows app, its YouTube sharing feature and the website at hindsight.crainey.co.uk. Discord sharing is not currently offered as a configured public service. This policy will be updated before introducing additional hosted integrations or materially different data practices.
Recordings and information on your PC
Hindsight stores recordings, screenshots, exports, settings and preview files on your PC. Depending on your selected recording settings, a recording can include gameplay, other visible on-screen information, system or application audio, and microphone audio. You control what you record and share.
Game detection and recording configuration can use local information about installed games and running applications. Hindsight does not upload that information, your library or recordings to its publisher as part of ordinary recording and editing. The app does not include advertising or an analytics/telemetry integration.
Local files remain until you delete them or Hindsight removes temporary/cache files as part of normal operation. Removing a YouTube connection does not remove your local recordings or exports.
Connecting YouTube
Hindsight uses YouTube API Services. Connecting opens Google's sign-in and authorization pages in your browser. Your Google password is entered with Google; Hindsight does not request or store it.
Hindsight requests the youtube.upload permission to upload videos to the YouTube channel you authorize. Google supplies an access token and refresh token so Hindsight can perform uploads you request. This integration does not request channel history, subscriptions, analytics or playlists.
The saved connection, including its refresh token, is encrypted locally using Windows current-user data protection (DPAPI). Access tokens are used in memory for authorized requests. A connection is stored until you disconnect or remove its local storage; permission can also expire or be revoked. A revoked or expired credential may remain in local storage until you disconnect or reconnect.
Hindsight also stores your agreement to the privacy policy and terms as a separate local preference, including the policy revision and agreement date. That preference contains no Google token. It is removed when you untick the agreement. A change to the bundled policies requires agreement again before connecting or uploading.
Google authorization tokens are not sent to a Hindsight-operated server. Browser cookies and Google's account handling during authorization are governed by Google's policies and your browser settings.
Uploading to YouTube
Connecting does not upload a video. When you select YouTube and press Upload video, Hindsight sends the selected exported video, its title, requested visibility and upload metadata directly from your PC to Google. It receives the upload result, including the video ID and any returned visibility, to display the result and video link.
Your clip may contain personal information about you or other people, depending on what you recorded. Review it before uploading. The video becomes available according to YouTube's actual visibility and access rules; processing or project restrictions can affect the result.
Hindsight does not sell Google user data, use it for advertising, or use it to train AI models. Its use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Access is used to provide the sharing feature you request.
Google processes information sent to its services under the Google Privacy Policy. YouTube use is also subject to the YouTube Terms of Service. Google controls the retention of videos and other information held in its services.
Disconnecting, revoking access and deleting videos
Click Disconnect in Hindsight's Share window to delete the saved YouTube connection on this PC. You can separately revoke Hindsight's permission through your Google account connections.
Disconnecting or revoking access does not delete previously uploaded videos. Manage or delete those videos in YouTube Studio. Local recordings and exports can be deleted on your PC. You do not need to send tokens or passwords to support to disconnect.
Website hosting and cookies
The website is hosted by Google Firebase Hosting, at hindsight.crainey.co.uk and crainey-hindsight.web.app. IONOS manages the domain registration and DNS rather than hosting the website content. Google processes technical request information needed to deliver and protect the site, including IP addresses and requests for pages and files. Firebase states that Hosting uses IP addresses to detect abuse and analyse usage, and retains IP data for a few months. See Firebase's privacy and security information.
These pages do not add analytics scripts, advertising, contact forms, embedded videos, cookies or browser-storage tracking. Links to external services take you to those services, where their own privacy and cookie practices apply. The site does not require an account or Google sign-in to read these pages.
App updates
Hindsight checks for and downloads updates from its configured Cloudflare R2 update service. Those network requests expose ordinary connection information to Cloudflare, such as an IP address and the requested feed or package. Update checking does not upload your clips, Google tokens or local game library.
Cloudflare operates the delivery infrastructure and may process technical request information for delivery, security and operational purposes. See the Cloudflare Privacy Policy. Hindsight does not maintain a separate user account or advertising profile for update downloads.
Support correspondence and lawful bases
If you email contact@crainey.co.uk, the publisher and the email service receive the information you send, such as your email address, message and attachments. Do not send Google passwords, authorization codes or tokens. Send recordings or diagnostic files only when you intend to share them for support.
Support correspondence is used to answer your request, investigate problems and handle privacy enquiries. It is retained only as long as reasonably needed to resolve and follow up on the enquiry, or to meet applicable legal requirements or address a dispute. Relevant correspondence may be deleted sooner when it is no longer needed.
The publisher relies on legitimate interests to provide support, maintain secure and reliable services and handle enquiries, and on legal obligations where retention or handling is required by law. Google authorization and each upload are actions you choose; you can withdraw Google's authorization using the controls above.
IONOS, Cloudflare, Google (including Firebase Hosting) and email providers process information associated with their respective services. Some providers may process information outside the UK. Their applicable service arrangements and privacy information describe their processing locations and safeguards. The publisher does not receive a central copy of your Google authorization tokens or uploaded video through Hindsight's YouTube integration.
Your rights and questions
Where applicable, UK data protection law gives you rights to access and correct personal information, request deletion or restriction, object to processing, and request portability. These rights depend on the information and the circumstances. Contact contact@crainey.co.uk about information held by the publisher. Use your PC's file controls and Google/YouTube's account controls for information held locally or by those services.
You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office. This policy may be updated as Hindsight changes; the current version and its date will be published on this page.
